Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Association

Sweetgrass Basket Making Summer Camp

Formed in 2004, the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Association (SCAA) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, established for the purpose of protecting and preserving the Gullah Geechee People’s history, cultures, traditions and their ancient sweetgrass basket making art form.

Our programs, activities and projects are designed to expose, interpret, educate, promote and tell the stories of the Gullah Geechee people’s contributions to our countries history, social, political, domestic and economic development throughout the years.

We are soliciting your financial support to help cover the costs associated with providing twenty five (25) boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 12 with the sweetgrass baskets raw materials, tools, t-shirts, lunch and snacks provided to campers participating in our 2018 Sweetgrass Basket Making Summer Camp program. The Sweetgrass Basket Making Summer Camp has been developed to help address the declining number of sweetgrass basket makers in our local communities and ensure that the sweetgrass basket making art form will continue to survive for the foreseeable future.

Currently, a significant number of our local sweetgrass basket makers range from middle age to senior citizens. In recent years, the numbers of elder sweetgrass basket makers has decreased and will continue declining for the foreseeable future.

Your financial support will be applied directly to the costs associated with providing the sweetgrass raw materials, supplies, T-Shirts, daily lunch and snacks for twenty five (25) summer campers.

Our Summer Camp will provide the opportunity for boys and girls to acquire the basic knowledge needed to create the sweetgrass basket making art form to continue producing the ancient sweetgrass basket art form, for generations to come.

Our 2018 Basket Making Camp Program will take place at the Town of Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park Sweetgrass Pavilion on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting on June 11, 2018 and ending on July 12, 2018. Daily camp activities are designed to teach the history of the Gullah Geechee people and encourage campers to participate and engage in hand on basket making activities.

I hope we can depend on you for your support to help our organization to protect and preserve the Gullah Geechee people’s sweetgrass basket making art form. Your financial contribution would provide an opportunity for a child to learn the sweetgrass basket making skills and techniques that would help to ensure that the ancient sweetgrass basket making art form is passed onto the next generation.

We have enclosed a Sweetgrass Basket Making Summer Camp Sponsor Scholarship Form for your consideration. Please select the number(s) of Campers of your choice and return to the address indicated. I appreciate your consideration and thank you for your continued support.
